When we did our midnight check last night, I could hear babies crying loudly and knew something was up. Thor, our Akbash LGD, was guarding one of the hoop houses and when I shined my light in there I found these two treasures up and trying to nurse. I thought it was pretty neat to see Thor protecting Bliss and her babies. Thor had to stop by and see how things were this morning. IMG_9727

Proud Mama, Drifa!

IMG_9667

Drifa with her ram lamb Finn, and ewe lamb Fern.

Finn, was the first to arrive and had a perfect delivery.  Little Fern was the last to make her appearance. Her front feet were coming out but no head. She had it way off to the side and twisted back. At 2 am I was convinced this was a headless lamb… I was about to give up fishing for it when it last I caught hold of it. It took several more minutes trying to align it correctly and finally pull her out. She span right to life and got busy looking for something to eat!

Drifa is such a good mamma. She was holding perfectly still while letting little Finn nurse and was licking little Fern off right after she was born. Fern, while trying to figure out her legs kept going backwards and Drifa would stretch her neck a little further and keep cleaning and holding perfectly still!

Shearing Day…

Wow!! What a day!  We had a five man and one woman crew hit the farm this afternoon with the single mission of shearing.  They did an outstanding job and had all 110 sheep nekid within an hour.  We weren’t able to get a shearer in this fall so it was a great relief to have it done today, about a month or so before lambing will start.  Here are some pictures of this afternoon, mostly taken by my 11 year-old, Garrett!

Shearing happened  a bit earlier than what I had hoped to have them shorn but the crew was coming through our area.  We missed fall shearing and rather than miss spring shearing and then really worry about them overheating this summer we went ahead and had it done.  The sheep might get a bit cool, but we have lots of places for them to get out of the cold and stay toasty.  We also have put down a couple of extra-large round straw bales out for them to nestle into.  Luckily the weather forecast is supposed to keep warming up and be in the mid 40′s with lows in the mid 30′s.  Thankfully no rain is in the forecast.

Ever Faithful…

That is our Dugur dog, he takes his job seriously.  Even when he appears to be asleep, if something suspicious happens he is up and going quicker than a flash.  Today he is busy patrolling the pasture, keeping the sheep and chickens safe…
