A Visitor…

Yesterday afternoon Dugur our LGD sounded off his warning cry.  Of course Zayne was about ready to go down for a nap so I sent one of the kids to see what he was barking at.  A few minutes later I recieved the official report back of “I dunno?”  After Zayne had drifted off, Dugur was still barking up a storm so I headed out to see what was up.  When I looked out into the pasture Dugur was jumping up and down and barking at something on the ground around the stock tank.  Goaty was nearby and is due to kid so I thought maybe she had kidded and that was what he was barking at.  As I got closer one of the whethers decided he needed a drink and Dugur walked in front of him and wouldn’t let him have access to the waterer.  When I jumped over the fence I was finally able to see what had him sooo upset…

A nice Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, made her way up from the river to mingle amongst the sheep!

We just studied turtles earlier in the year so it was fun to look this guy over and review.

They hung on to her just long enough to show dad when he got home from work and then left her to go on her way again…

It’s nice to know that Dugur will protect the sheep…from a ferocious turtle anyway!

A couple of years ago on the 4th of July at the Fortine Creek we ran into this guy…
