June is a month that holds a lot of Birthdays for our family. Last Wed. was Zayne’s, this Wed. (today) is Garrett’s, next Wed. is Teigen’s and the following Wed. is my mom’s. Too cool huh? When we were getting close to having Zayne, the day before his birthday I was musing how it would be really neat if he would be born on the 3rd making all their birthdays a week apart. But our due date was not until the 21st another 3 weeks away. So imagine my surprise when I woke up the next morning and my water broke!

Anyway…. TODAY is Garrett’s birthday. My quick with a smile, animal loving, spark in his eye, quick witted, growing up too fast, not so little anymore little boy is eight today. He is the one I can set on a cleaning mission and he’ll happily set to work on it and have it done in no time! He has the best sense of humor and is really too smart for his own good!

Eight years ago we nearly lost this little boy. I had been contracting all the day before and things were finally getting in to a pattern later that night so we decided to go in and get checked. My doctor was out of town and once we got to the hospital everything just petered out, which seems to be what happens to me. I think I just labor better at home. I was only dilated to 3 and since I was now just having the occasional contraction that wasn’t doing too much we were sent home with some pills to help me sleep and told to come back in when things got going a little bit better. But instead of helping me sleep the pills made me sort of wiry and made me vomit all night long.

After being up all night and not sure what to do at 6 am on the 10th we headed back up to L&D to be checked again. I hadn’t progressed much and we were hooked up to the monitors and waiting for the doctor on call to come by and chat with us when the baby’s heart rate disappeared. One of the nurses moved the sensor around trying to pick up his heart beat andwhen she couldn’t find it another nurse grabbed it from her and sorta laughed at her and asked if she was having problems! When she could only find a very decelerated heart rate the room got busy and the doctor on call was paged and ran in. It was determined that his cord had prolapsed and the doctor had to manually (ow ow ow!!!) push his head up and move the cord over, (ow ow ow!!!) which immediately brought his heart rate back up. I was about done in. At this point I had been awake for 30+ hours and I was just emotionally and physically tired and petrified something bad was going to happen. I actually had to be talked out of a C-Section! Instead pitocin was started and about 2 hours later with about 3 pushes Garrett made his arrival. He was very purple and his poor nose was sooo mushed up against his face from arriving so fast. He was on oxygen for just a few minutes and since then we have been running to keep up with him.
